THE SOUND OF PAIN

Pain is an uncomfortable feeling that tells you something may be wrong. It can be steady, throbbing, stabbing, aching, pinching, or described in many other ways. Sometimes, it’s just a nuisance, like a mild headache, other times, it can be debilitating.
Pain is classified as either acute or chronic. Acute pain is usually severe and short-lived, and is often a signal that your body has been injured. There are three different types of acute pain:
  • Somatic pain:
Somatic pain is a superficial pain on the skin or the soft tissues just below the skin.
  • Visceral pain:
This pain originates in the internal organs and the linings of cavities in the body.
  • Referred pain:
A person experiences visceral pain at a location other than the source of tissue damage. For example, people often experience shoulder pain during a heart attack.
Chronic pain on the other hand, can range from mild to severe, is present for long periods of time, and is often the result of a disease that may require ongoing treatment.
The fight-or-flight reactions eventually stop in people with chronic pain, as the sympathetic nervous system that triggers these reactions adapts to the pain stimulus.

PAIN AND SOUND AS THERAPY

In physics, sound is a vibration that propagates as an acoustic wave, through a transmission medium such as a gas, liquid or solid. In human physiology and psychology, sound is the reception of such waves and their perception by the brain.Sound affects every aspect of our lives – even in our communication
The ancient Greeks used music to cure mental disorders and throughout history, sound has been used to help people work faster, influence, and boost morale. Many also believe that sound can heal the body. That’s because humans have a natural instinct for sound therapy.
There are 4 ways in which sound impacts our bodies and they are:
  • Physiologically
Our bodies are 70% water and sound is known to travel well in water, so we’re very good conductors of sound.
  • Psychologically
Psychologically, sound changes our emotions and our moods. Music for example, changes our mood and has the capacity of shifting us deeply. There are plenty of sounds in nature that have the same effect like the bird song for example, makes us feel relaxed and reassured, because we’ve learned over hundreds of thousands of years that when the birds are singing we’re normally pretty safe.
  • Cognitively
Cognitively speaking, how well we work is very dependent on the sound around us. Our kids may tell us that they do their homework much better with loud music playing but it’s not true unfortunately. The loud music is probably taking up critical audio bandwidth and they’re not able to hear their internal voice so well. The most distracting sound of all is the human voice. If somebody’s speaking next to you, it’s very difficult to block out that sound. We have no earlids and distracting human conversation hugely impedes your productivity.
  • Behaviourally
We tend to move away from unpleasant sound if we can or even gravitate towards pleasant sounds. Sound can cause stress and make us behave negatively. It makes us less sociable, less helpful and less approachable if we’re in a noisy setting.
So sound changes us in four powerful ways (as above) and those four ways are running all the time. It’s important to know this because if you start to listen consciously to the sounds around you, you could start to design your environment so that those effects are not working against you.

USING SOUND TO HEAL PAIN

Sound healing helps activate the body’s natural healing system for deep restorative healing on a cellular and emotional level.
The harmonizing effect produced by the sound creates a soothing effect throughout the entire body. When different sound vibrations and frequencies are created, it impacts the body and its meridians helping you promote deep relaxation, release emotional trauma, and relieve stress and anxiety.
Sound travels from the source, such as a musical device, to our ears, in the form of waves that travel slower than light waves.
The sound wave hits our eardrum, making it vibrate and transmit this vibration deeper into our ear, through a fluid-filled tunnel that contains hair cells. The vibrations cause the fluid to move in waves, which then makes the hair cells move. This information from the hair cells is sent from the auditory nerve in the ear, to the brain, which can then decode it. If each ear hears a tone of a different frequency, then the difference between the two frequencies will be perceived by the brain.

Sound therapy uses low frequencies that fall in the alpha-theta-gamma-delta range, which corresponds to the brainwave frequencies that vibrate in the lower range.
To put this into perspective, let’s think for a moment about the sleep cycle. When we’re awake and fully conscious and alert, the frequency of our brain waves is between 14-30 Hz, which are called beta waves. When we begin to fall asleep and dissociate ourselves from the external environment, our brain starts to drift into a calm state, characteristic of alpha waves, which range from about 8 to 12 Hz. Waves in this frequency range can stimulate production of serotonin. There is also evidence for enhanced memory, reductions in cortisol, the major stress hormone, and emotional stability.
Creative flow states may also be enhanced, and actually, when the brain of Albert Einstein was analyzed using an EEG, it showed he produced consistent alpha-band activity while solving complex mathematical tasks. Once we get into even deeper sleep, we delve into even lower vibrational frequencies, say between 4-8 Hz, called theta brainwaves. These brain waves are present during deep relaxation, when we are dreaming during REM sleep. It is believed that this mental state allows us to reach our subconscious and bring about deep healing. This is also the state in which we can manifest our dreams into reality.

When sound impacts the body, it sends a vibration that awakens the subtle body to summon the energies of the energetic body to heal the physical body. Sound then acts as a healing medium that hypothetically speaking massages the part in our bodies that is ailing and is in need of deep repair by relaxing the body into theta state so that it can act as a conductor to the vibration that obliterates the ailment or dis-ease.

With the capability of cleansing and eradicating illnesses, sound literally impacts the vibration of our own energies – it simply, raises the vibration of our bodies which dispels lower vibrating energies such as dis-eases. When our bodies are vibrating higher, we are free from dis-ease, free from pain and therefore, free to live abundantly…
May you always vibe in happiness!
