Goddess Matangi is one of the ten Mahavidyas or Tantric goddesses. She is a fierce form of Goddess Durga and the Tantric form of Saraswati, who is the goddess of art and learning. She rules knowledge, speech, music, and the arts. It is believed that one can acquire supernatural powers by worshipping her. Such powers include control over one’s enemies, the ability to attract people, mastery over the arts, and obtaining supreme knowledge.
The goddess is green in colour and has a crescent moon on Her forehead like Shiva. She holds a veena (musical instrument) in Her hand and a sword in the other. Her seat is a bejeweled golden throne. Two other hands hold a sword and a human skull. She has a lovely smile and intoxicating eyes.
Matangi Maa wears a garland of kadamba flowers. One of Her forms is Goddess Tripura Sundari, who holds floral arrows and a sugarcane bow. She is very fond of parrots.
The mantra that is dedicated to Matangi Maa is the Matangi mantra. It can be chanted for wish-fulfillment. By chanting it regularly, our wishes will be granted. Whether it is name and fame, or boundless wealth, one’s wishes will be readily granted by the goddess if she is pleased with you.
One thing that pleases the goddess immensely is giving alms. And the more you give, the more you get. When we give alms, we can also help maintain the balance in the universe, because not everyone is rich. It is not easy to give away what one has earned through hard work. So the effort is really laudable and earns the grace of the goddess. By helping others, we also earn much good karma and feel happy and satisfied.
Matangi is an incarnation of Goddess Saraswati. When one chants Her mantra with devotion and piety, the goddess will be happy and shower Her grace on the devotee.
She will grant their wishes and even bestow supernatural powers on them. Such people will be able to gain control over their enemies and also gain knowledge of the supreme being and the self.
