Falling during the months of January to February (Gregorian calendar), Mauni (or Mauna) Amavasya (new moon) 2021 is a unique Hindu tradition observed during the Hindu month of Magha.
The word ‘mauni,’ or ‘mauna,’ signifies silence, therefore on this day, most Hindus observe ‘maun vrat,’ or complete silence throughout the whole New Moon period. It is a time to take stock of our authenticity and give voice to the power of our silence, in stepping back and becoming the observer in their lives.
Mauni Amavasya Tithi starts on 11th February 2021 (01:09am) and ends on 12th February, 2021 (12.35am).
Considered to be the last Amavasya in the whole year before Maha Shivratri (March 11th 2021), this day marks the culmination of all that has taken place for us, the good and the bad, while we anticipate the respite that is waiting to happen for us in the coming months.
With the New Moon in Aquarius, it is a phase that is preparing us for newness and a brand new future for all of us.
Aquarius is an era mostly associated with change, innovation, freedom and transformation as well as awakenings to our potential that is waiting to give birth to massive shifts in our lives that will change the course of our lives forever, since the new norms we’ve had to embrace over the past year. This Ammavasya, Aquarius comes to offer the ‘peace pipe,’ so to speak, to bringing things up to speed so that we get to transcend our emotional, mental and spiritual Selves, at a rate we can fully comprehend and perhaps, make peace with.
RITUALS FOR MAUNA AMMAVASYA
-
Practise silent ‘Om’ Japa chanting 108x;
-
Offer flowers and incense to your favourite deities and your entire lineage of maternal and paternal ancestors;
-
Let go of what serves you no more, in terms of anger, resentment and frustrations and start getting prepared to receive all that is coming for you;
-
Set Sankalpa (intention) on what you wish to invite into your life.
-
Practise silence for the entire day till the end of Ammavasya tomorrow (12th February 2021), including gadget fasting, spending time immersing in meditations or art, or writing a journal – you could write a letter to someone whom you want to have closure with and burn the letter when you are done;
-
Create a vision board of what you wish to invite into your life in the next 3 months. Be crisp and clear with what you desire for yourself.
As we feel weird sensations of being swung from our pasts to our futures with Mercury in retrograde, Saturn teaches us to be present-minded, giving ourselves the permission to witness the future that is unfolding before our eyes. Stay grounded and allow, allow, allow…
May you discover your sovereign power in your silence.
