Goddess of the Root Chakra, She, Goddess Shailaputri, represents self-worth, stability, balance and steadfastness.

The Root Chakra (Muladhara) is located at the base of the spine, the pelvic floor, and the first three vertebrae and is responsible for our sense of safety and security on this earthly journey. The word Muladhara breaks down into two Sanskrit words: Mula meaning “root,” and Adhara, means “support,” or “base.”

The Root Chakra represents whatever it is in our lives that make us feel grounded. These needs can be different for each individual person, but usually include our basic physical necessities such as food, water, and shelter, but also extends to our emotional needs of feeling safe and interconnected.

The Root Chakra is the base of our life force energy and acts as the link between the outside physical world and our internal energetic system—it gives us the motivation to get up each day, eat, create and procreate.

It is the starting point for developing and maintaining balance. At birth, Muladhara asks, “do I belong here?” and becomes the basis for our sense of stability and security.

An imbalance in the life force energy of the Root Chakra can leave us feeling profoundly insecure, restless, without energy. This imbalance can manifest as anxiety, depression, rage, low self-esteem, resentment, and even suicidal thoughts. Without the grounding energy of a balanced Root Chakra, we no longer have a sense of belonging and may lose interest in the world and being a part of it. Mental signs of an imbalanced Root Chakra are pessimism, poor focus, and a negative outlook.

These feelings can be totally overwhelming, taking over our lives and affecting everything we do.

It is believed that the Root Chakra connects us with the energies of our ancestors, as well as with their challenges and successes. These ancestral “memories,” coupled with our own experiences; can ultimately lead us to being challenged with an imbalance at some point in our lives. The difficult histories of war, famine and natural disasters of those who came before us are all recorded in the Root Chakra.

These experiences are passed down from generation to generation and create unconscious patterns of behaviours – the karmas of our past and current lives lie in the energy of Root Chakra.

These energies may lay dormant and get activated by certain situations that trigger these energies leading to a kaleidoscope of feelings we experience mentally, spiritually, physically, emotionally, and/or psychologically.

The colour of the muladhara chakra and the first day of Sharad Navaratri is reddish-orange, representing rebirthing, newness and willpower.

Offering ghee (the most potent offering to the Goddess) and jasmine flowers to Goddess Shailaputri and meditating on the muladhara, connecting with the Self, and immersing into the Goddess, will aid you in the journey of your own spiritual path, as well as help release what serves you no more.

Pray to Maa Shailaputri to release you from your agony and give you clarity in the path ahead.

It is believed that the Moon, the provider of all fortunes, is governed by Goddess Shailputri and any bad effects of the Moon (astrologically speaking), can be overcome by worshipping Maa Shailaputri..

Oh great goddess, I commit thousands of offences routinely,
So please think me as your slave and please pardon me.

Aavajanam na janami, na janami visarjanam,
Poojam chaiva na janami, kshamyatham Parameshwari.

I do not how to invoke you, nor do I know how do send you away,
And I also do not know how to worship you, and please pardon me.

Manthraheenam, kriyaheenam, Bhakthiheenam, Sureswari,

I do not know chants or holy action or devotion, Oh God of the devas,
And so whatever worship I do, please make it complete.

If one calls you, Mother of the universe and commits hundred mistakes,
Still you look after his salvation, and this cannot be done by Brahma and other devas.

Saparadhosmi saranam prathasthvam jagadambike,
Idhanee manu kampyoham Yadecchasi thada kuru.

Oh mother of the universe, having committed several mistakes I seek your refuge,
And please decide on the fate of this shivering one according to your wishes.

Agnana smrutherbranthya yanyoonam adhikam krutham.
Thath sarva kshamyadham devi praseedha parameshwari.

Oh great goddess I have done all this due to ignorance and wayward thoughts,
And so excuse them all and be pleased with me.

Kameshwari jaganmatha sachidananda vigrahe,
Grahanarchameemam preethya praseeda parameshwari.

Oh Goddess of love, Oh mother of the world, Oh source of eternal happiness,
Please accept my worship and with love become pleased with me.

Guhyadhi guhya gopthri grahana asmad krutham japam,
Sidhir bhavathu mey devi thwat prasadath sureshwari.
